Karma Yoga Program
Immerse Yourself in Service
Join Our Community in Mexico
If you are longing to deepen your practice of selfless service, we invite you to apply for the Karma Yoga Program at our center in Mazunte, Oaxaca. This residential program offers you a full immersion into our community and teachings. You’ll participate in yoga and meditation sessions, support our internal operations, and engage in our active community life. You can learn more about the Hridaya Community Vision here.
Karma Yoga Program Commitment and Benefits
As a Karma Yogi, you commit to serving for a 3-cycle period. That means you’ll live at our center for just under 4 months. You’ll serve 5 hours per day, 5 days per week in one of the following areas: kitchen, maintenance, gardening, registration, accommodations, IT, graphic design, photography/videography, and marketing. In addition to formal working hours, you’ll play an integral part in welcoming new students and holding a friendly space in the community.
During your time in the Karma Yoga Program, we’ll provide accommodation (dormitory or camping), communal meals 6 days per week, and complimentary participation in one Hridaya Module, one 10-day retreat, and daily meditation sessions.
The practice of Hridaya Meditation and Hatha Yoga is the foundation of our community. As it’s most harmonious to experience the Hridaya teachings prior to committing to the Karma Yoga Program, you must complete the Hridaya Yoga Retreat: Module 1 Intensive or a 10-Day Hridaya Silent Meditation Retreat before applying. We offer these courses at our centers in Mexico and France.
Note that we occasionally need Karma Yogis or staff members with specific technical skills. In such cases, we may waive this prerequisite. You can view any current opportunities here.
In addition to the above requirements, you must:
- Have a visa valid for the entire length of the service commitment or be a Mexican citizen or permanent resident.
- Have personal health insurance that covers your time in the program.
Karma Yoga Retreat
During the Karma Yoga Program, you’ll fully participate in one 10-day retreat and serve in two others. We call time spent serving in retreats the “Karma Yoga Retreat.” During Karma Yoga Retreats, you’ll be immersed in the retreat environment, maintaining noble silence. To deepen this process, you’ll participate in daily meditations and Hatha Yoga classes, listen to live audio streams of retreat lectures, and perform service hours in support of the retreat participants.
We align with the traditional yogic view that inner transformation blossoms from consistent spiritual practice. Hridaya Meditation is a form of Self-Inquiry and is our primary tool to reconnect with the infinite depth and intimacy of our being.
While living in our community may in itself appeal to you, we believe that the purification of the subconscious mind, psychological healing, and spiritual freedom arise from regular spiritual practice.
Therefore, daily participation in our 1-hour morning meditation (Monday to Saturday) is an essential part of your commitment as a Karma Yogi. Regular attendance at Hatha Yoga classes is also expected. You shouldn’t see these guidelines as rigid rules but as a support for your inner transformation. When you reconnect with the Heart, such commitments become effortless and natural, bringing stability and trust in your real Self.
Being a student and serving in the Karma Yoga Program is a unique opportunity to learn authentic approaches to meditation and Hatha Yoga in a safe and nurturing environment. If you don’t feel a calling for inner transformation, please don’t apply. It would be a pity to take the place of someone who is genuinely yearning for such an experience.
Finally, please be sure to read our Coronavirus Safety Guidelines before applying.
To support Self-Awareness, we’ll ask that you honor noble silence every morning until 11:30 am. This means avoiding both inner mental chatter and outer talking. Of course, sometimes speaking is necessary to perform your service tasks—in such cases, whisper.
Work Exchange versus Karma Yoga
Please be aware that there is a big difference between work exchange and Karma Yoga. Karma Yoga means the yoga of action done with awareness, detachment, and love. Before applying to the Karma Yoga Program, please read more about the path of selfless service here.
If you have contemplated the above service commitments and feel inspired to join this program, please complete our online application form. We’ll process your application and contact you if there is a suitable position available.
Please note that we receive many applications for the Karma Yoga Program and have limited space available. We aspire to respond to all applicants promptly, but sometimes our answers may be delayed.
